Irokawa is a specialty restaurant of grilled eel rice.
It is located in a residential area of Asakusa 淺草.
Traditional Japanese local decoration. There is a VIP room of tatami seating at the end (please see the bottom right corner).
Grilled Eel Rice Set Yen 1,900 (tax incl., HK$142, rate 0.075) is served with pickles and soup.
Eel size is smaller and the texture is not in the very high quality category.
Rice and sauce are both delectable. Before long, rice and eel in the box disappear.
They also finish the whole box of grilled eel rice, and enjoy the meal very much.
The eel is steamed before it is grilled. In such process, oil will be left in the pot.
Both
sides of the eel is grilled by charcoal in the beginning. It is then
soaked with grilled eel sauce in pot (pointed by red arrow on the left).
After the final grill, it would be served to diners.

Very comfortable seating should not be expected. Please divert your
attention to enjoy the traditional Japanese decoration and the foods.
I
really want to have a try in a traditional local grilled eel restaurant
this time. Irokawa is therefore the specialty restaurant selected. It
is located in residential area of Asakusa 淺草, and not far away from
metro station. It is a bit late in lunchtime; the restaurant is only 80%
full. Irokawa is a typical Japanese local decoration restaurant; I
treasure to experience a lunch here. There is a VIP room of tatami
seating at the end. The chef should also be the owner who is a guy of
about 60 years old, but he is quite energetic. His wife and another lady
are the waitresses.
A
grilled eel rice set of Yen 1,900 is ordered. Since I select a seat in
front of the open kitchen, I can see the whole process of preparing my
lunch set. This is the first time I have such a short distance to the
kitchen. It is surely a bonus to me in this trip to Tokyo. Frankly
speaking, quality of grilled eel rice set is high, but not to so great
as the experience I have before. Grilled eel is smaller in size, and the
meat texture is not of very high quality. Rice is not in the best
condition, in my experience. All these can be improved further. To dine
in Irokawa gives me an impression of family lunch and the traditional
Japanese decoration is surely a memorable experience.
