Fried Vegetarian Shark Fin with Black Truffle $98 is the best item in the dinner.
Mixed vegetables in Chinese Pot $55 has nothing special.
Broccoli and Abalone Mushroom in Sauce $60. The sauce is the saltiest
in the dinner and is as sticky as glue. But the sliced mushroom is
very big in size and of good quality.

E
said he regularly dined with his father in Tung Fong Siu Kee Yuen when
he was very young (But I do not think he is still young now, though he
always said he is young. Hope he will not see this comment in my blog. ). In addition, magazines always said Tung Fong is a vegetarian
restaurant of long history. It should have its merits, otherwise it can
survive up till now, in my mind.
We arrive at about 1930 and the restaurant is nearly full. Quite a lot
of diners are ladies. Normally they would order 3 dishes if they have 2
persons, or 4 dishes for 3 persons. In my observation, the dish size is
not small.
We order 3 dishes, namely “Fried Vegetarian Shark Fin with Black
Truffle $98”, “Mixed vegetables in Chinese Pot $55”, and “Broccoli and
Abalone Mushroom in Sauce $60”. The bill is $243 (average per head is
$120).
We
are delighted because we can try truffle in Chinese cuisine. In “Fried
Truffle in Vegetarian Shark Fin”, there are fried egg, vegetarian
sliced luncheon meat, sliced green pepper, bean sprouts, vegetarian
shark fin and truffle. The dish is special as it has a strong flavor of mushroom. It is anyway my first try of
truffle in Chinese food. This is the best item in our dinner, as it is
not salty and not oily.
In
“Mixed vegetables in Chinese pot”, there are baby corn, mushroom, tofu,
cabbage and radish. This dish is slightly salty, but has nothing
special. In “Broccoli and Abalone Mushroom in Sauce”, you may select
your preferred vegetable. However, the dish is a bit salty, is the saltiest one in the dinner
and can only get a pass. The brown sauce is as sticky as glue.
Though
the restaurant is not a big one (it has totally 15 tables which are
mainly 4-persons tables), we do not think that it is very noisy. Maybe,
this is the difference between a vegetarian restaurant and a normal
restaurant. Tung Fong Siu
Kee Yuen has a long history, it seems that it has no improvement in its
products. We really do not understand the reason why so many people
still appraise it. All the foods are not very delicious; we guess this
is the result of no MSG. It is admitted that the food materials are of good quality and fresh.
