Lau Sum Kee Noodles 劉森記麵家 @ Shamshuipo 深水埗

We have not ordered the signature noodle - 'Noodle w/ Prawn Roe' this time but order noodles with wonton and water dumpling (shui jiao).

Wontons are originally placed under the noodle (we put them on the top for photo-taking purpose). Totally there are 4 pieces of wonton (which is quite tasty), shrimps are naturally fresh. A pity is that noodle texture cannot get a pass. It is not al dente at all, there is a big distance from that in Wing Wah and / or Ho Hung Kee on Hong Kong Island.

There are 4 big pieces of water dumpling (shui jiao). It should have the same seasonings as that of wonton, resulting that shui jiao is quite delectable as well. Soup base is not tasty, we can only ascertain no msg or only a small amount of msg has been added, if any. The soup is surely not prepared by boiling old chicken, Chinese ham and spare rib.

We are not contented with the number of noodle (wonton noodle) shops we have tried so far and incidentally arrange a visit to Lau Sum Kee Noodles (LSK) in Sham Shui Po. In the afternoon, though it is not lunchtime or dinnertime, LSK is still nearly full. But there is no queue outside the shop. Though LSK claims to have nearly 60 years history, this shop should have been renovated recently and gives us a new and comparatively comfortable ambiance. It is anyway a layout of typical noodle shop in Hong Kong .

We order noodle with wonton and water dumpling (shui jiao) respectively, the bill is $46 (average per head $23). Wonton noodle is priced at only $18 per bowl. There is a big price difference (~50%) from those tasty wonton noodles on Hong Kong Island , namely Wing Wah and Ho Hung Kee.

When they are served to us, noodle portion is not small. Wonton and shui jiao are both very tasty, and we both like them. Color of soup base is correct and reddish brown, it should be the color of adding soya sauce. A pity is that the soup is only a soup of soya sauce, there is nothing special and it must not be the result of boiling old chicken, ham and sparerib for several hours. Noodles are not in the category of al dente, this is a point we are quite disappointing. Strictly speaking, if LSK is a noodle shop of 58 years, its noodle texture should be failed.

We now understand fully that noodle quality at $18 really has a distance from those at $27. But if LSK is only a normal noodle house in the street, food quality and pricing are both acceptable. Though we have not yet tried its another signature dish – 'Noodle with Prawn Roe', we really do not have the impetus any more.
