In
the US Time Magazine, Beating the Petty Person is posted as one of the
fifteen 'The Best of Asia 2009'. It is the 'Best way to get it off your
chest'. Beating the Petty Person (also known as Villain Hitting, Da Siu Yan or Demon Exorcising, 打小人) is a folk sorcery popular in the Guangdong area of China, including Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, the Canal Road Flyover between Wanchai and Causeway Bay
(commonly called Goose-neck Bridge ) is a popular place for beating the
Petty Person.
The ceremony is normally performed by older ladies. It costs HK$50 per beating.
The purpose of beating the petty person is not to kill someone, but to tell people to stop messing with you.
"I am beating you, petty person! You have air, but you can't breathe! You have feet, but you can't walk!" /2009
