The
Chinese name implies it is an island of red earth. It is located at the
mouth of Tolo Harbour, at the north east of Hong Kong. The whole island
is rust-colored. This extraordinary scene is known as "Danxia Wonder at
Sea". Port Island is the number one representative of Hong Kong and is a
member of Hong Kong Rock's Wonders in Hong Kong National Geopark.
The
water around Pork Island (near the lighthouse) is a good area for
diving. With water depths of 25 meters (maximum) and muddy seabed, there
are a lot of soft coral and colorful sea life. It is a place suitable
for photo-taking.
Port Island is uninhabited.
On the part
below this picture, there are more white layered lines. It looks like
numerous white mice and snakes escaping to the upper side of the island.
These pictures are too horrible that I have deleted them all.
In this part of Port Island, the rocks are layered.
Crystallized chemicals on rock are confined to this section only.

Dragon Head. As time goes by, it will no longer look like a dragon head.
We
must pass this gap with care by sliding and crawling. If not, we have
to swim along the sea-shore. Maybe, several years later, the remanent
portion would be collapsed.
They are brave and professional to help all participants.
They chat with ease. But the participants are panicking and moving forward slowly.
The opposite is the Sharp Peak (also Nam She Tsim 蚺蛇尖) of Sai Kung Peninsula.
A snake is returning to water.
Another
enjoyable, adventurous and memorable experience to Port Island is to
pass through a cave. Not all participants who have visited Port Island
know there is such a cave.
It is in fact at a position above, at
and below sea level, depending on the tidemark. Today we are
exceptionally lucky that the tidemark is low, we have the chance to
experience and to pass through a cave barefoot. Please note there is no
plant on rock surfaces.
We nearly finish the 'time tunnel'.
Originally,
the tidemark is very low. As there are quite a lot of participants, it
takes time to pass through. Those at the back are wet on the trousers,
if any. This is the end of the cave. If tidemark is high, the cave will
be fully flooded.
Rocks are corroded in the course of time, becoming small islands and rocks of special shape.
After
hiking / climbing / crawling / sliding of about three hours, we walk
along the sea-shore to get on the small boat and leave Port Island.
